Tristis Ward lives and writes in Fredericton, New Brunswick. After a degree in English at Dalhousie University, she worked for years in community radio as a producer, station manager, and national lobbyist. She has written comic book scripts, short stories and plays as well as producing both stage and radio plays. She has published online in the SFF World Forum and is a multiple winner in their flash fiction contests. Bones of the Magus is her first graphic novel.

Joe Blades is a Fredericton, NB writer and artist on the editorial board of revue ellipse mag. He is founding publisher of Broken Jaw Press, and the current Past President of the League of Canadian Poets. Blades has given readings, lectures, and workshops in Canada, the USA, Scotland, and Central Europe. Since 1995 he has been the community radio producer–host of Ashes, Paper & Beans: Fredericton’s Writing & Arts Show (CHSR FM). Blades is the editor of ten anthologies, curator of a videopoem screening, and author of seven poetry books, including River Suite, and the sequel to Casemate Poems (Collected) titled Prison Songs and Storefront Poetry.

BONES OF THE MAGUS

All that Remains: A magician prince wakes up inside a church’s reliquary without his army, empire, weapons, or even flesh on his bones. What is left of his memory barely holds intact long enough to help him escape. But where on Earth can a skeleton hide?

Where There’s a Will…: Prince Magus Sical, on the run from both the law and the church, has taken refuge in the home of two hostages. He uses all he has left, his magic infused bones, to search for clues to how he died and how he might return.

Culture Clash: Where does a dead prince with a penchant for the arcane fit in? The Goths will never be the same once they’re drawn into the war between the undead and the self righteous.

Blood, Fire & Brimstone: In a battle between enemies of conviction there can be no walls left standing, no followers left free, no pawns left alive. Sical comes full circle in his quest to destroy everything that stands between him and his throne. But is he leading, or being led? Is he freeing himself from death, or being bound yet again to his mortal doom?

El sábado, 14 de mayo, 2011 a las dos de la tarde, el Capítulo de Fredericton de la Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía (con la colaboración de la Asociación Latina de New Brunswick —Proyecto PRESENCIA—, y Broken Jaw Press) invita al público a participar en el quinto Festival Internacional Palabra en el Mundo, que se celebra entre el 19 y el 24 de mayo en el mundo entero: más de 30 países y más de 500 ciudades celebrarán este Festival. Este año, los poetas han contribuido poemas sobre el tema de la PAZ. El evento tendrá lugar en la sala de lectura del Rio de la Biblioteca Pública de Fredericton y luego en el Puente del río San Juan (si no llueve). Están invitados a participar con un poema sobre el tema de la PAZ o solo escuchar a los poetas locales leyendo poemas suyos. Habrá café y galletas. ¡Nos vemos allí!

May 14: V International Festival of Poetry Word in the World

On Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 2 p.m., the Fredericton Chapter of the Iberoamerican Academy of Poetry (in collaboration with the New Brunswick Latino Association —PRESENCIA Project— and Fredericton’s Broken Jaw Press) invites the public to participate in the fifth annual Word in the World Poetry Festival, being celebrated between May 19th to 24th across the world in more than 30 countries and in more than 500 cities. This year poets have been contributing pieces on the theme of “Peace”. The event will take place at the Fredericton Public Library’s River Reading Area and on the Bridge over the St. John River (weather permitting). Come read your favourite poem on the theme of peace and hear local poets read their poetry as well! There will be coffee and treats. See you there!

Bios
Nela Rio is an internationally-recognized Argentine-Canadian author, artist, and arts organizer living in Fredericton. Professor at St. Thomas University since 1971, retired in 2003. Nela has 12 books published, and has been widely published in literary journals and anthologies in Canada, Spain, U.S.A., Honduras, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. Her work has been translated into English, French, Catalán, Portuguese, and Slovene. In May 2008, a symposium was held on her creative work, organized by Red Cultural Hispánica at the Canadian branch of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Gatineau, Québec. Several of her books are used in university courses in Canada, U.S.A. and Brazil. There are Master and Ph.D. thesis, on her work. She is the President of the Registro Creativo of the Canadian Asociation of Hispanists; the founder and organizer of the Annual Multilicultural Multilingual Poetry Recital (since 2000), and the Outspoken Art/Arte Claro exhibition, for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. She is also the Director of the Capítulo Fredericton of the Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía.

The Fredericton Chapter of the Iberoamerican Academy of Poetry and the League of Canadian Poets invite you to a Poetry Recital in Spanish and English by Fredericton Poets Nela Rio and Joe Blades on Saturday, April 30th at 2 pm at the River Reading Room in the Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carleton St., Fredericton. Both poets will be reading from recent publications and new materials. Nela Rio has recently been nominated for the League of Canadian Poets’ Pat Lowthers Award. She recently launched her collection of poetry, La Luna, Tango, siempre la luna /The Moon, Tango, Always the Moon (Broken Jaw Press, 2010). Blades’ most recent work published is Prison Songs and Storefront Poetry (Ekstasis Editions, 2010). He is an active member of the local BlackTop MotorCycle Gang writers’ group, coordinator of the Fredericton Small Press & Community Fair, and President of the League of Canadian Poets.

This event is held in conjunction with the 2011 National Poetry Month. Fredericton poet and artist Nela Rio will launch her book, La luna, Tango, siempre la luna /The Moon, Tango, Always the Moon (Broken Jaw Press) on Saturday April 16, 2011 at 2 pm, at the Fredericton Public Library’s beautiful River Reading Area (upstairs), 12 Carleton Street, Fredericton. The Fredericton Chapter of the Ibero-American Academy of Poetry is hosting the event. The book, published by Broken Jaw Press in 2010 has been translated from the Spanish by translator Edith Jonsson-Devillers and includes a prologue by Governor General’s Literary Award winner, poet and translator, Hugh Hazelton. This collection has been short-listed for the League of Canadian Poet’s prestigious Pat Lowther Memorial Award, a prize given for a book of poetry by a Canadian woman published in the preceding year in memory of the late writer whose career was cut short by her untimely death. The judges commented: “Foreign accents, mystery, intrigue, sensuousness, all culminate in the dance that steps over, around, and through the mundane and lifts its skirts to new heights and wishes.” Please join us for a rare opportunity to discover one of Fredericton’s most talented writers. There will be a brief presentation of the book, followed by a bilingual reading of selected poems from the collection.

Vadimir Tasić reading @ St Thomas University

The Department of Romance Languages at St. Thomas University is hosting Reading Without Boundaries: Serbian-Born Writer Vladimir Tasić Presents "Farewell Gift” at 7 pm, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 in 101 Brian Mulroney Hall, Fredericton. Multilingual readings of excerpts from Oproštajni dar (Farewell Gift) will be done in Serbian, English, French and Spanish, followed by a question and answer period with the author. Named one of the ten influential novels in the Serbian language since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Oproštajni dar (Svetovi, Novi Sad, 2001) has appeared in French, German, Slovakian, and Slovenian editions. It will appear in [someone’s] series “100 Slavic Novels: ten “post-wall” novels from ten Slavic countries” [but I have no information on the series, so can’t speak to it—Joe Blades].

Vadimir Tasić is a professor in the UNB-Fredericton Mathematics Department. He got there by way of grad studies at the University of Winnipeg in the late ’80s followed by postdoctoral work/studies at Oxford in England. He is originally from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (in what is now Srbija). He has authored several collections of short fiction, novels, and the nonfiction book Mathematics and the Roots of Postmodern Thought (Oxford University Press, New York, 2001). He won the NIN award, Serbia’s premiere literary award, for Oproštajni dar.

His only fiction book to be published in English, Herbarium of Souls (Broken Jaw Press, 1998)—a translation by Ralph Bogert, Christine Pribichevich-Zorić and Vladimir Tasić—of his second book Radost Brodolomnika (Svetovi, 1997), was published in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

CONCURSO ANUAL DE POESIA Nuestra voz en New Brunswick

1. Para promover la creación poética en lengua española de los poetas que viven en la Provincia de New Brunswick y cuya lengua materna es el español, el Concurso Anual de Poesía “Nuestra voz en New Brunswick” se ha establecido por la Asociación Latina de New Brunswick y el Capítulo Fredericton de la Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía.

2. El plazo para recibir poemas para el Primer Concurso Anual “Nuestra voz en New Brunswick” es el 15 de diciembre, 2010 Los resultados se anunciarán a fines de febrero, 2011.

Cómo participar:
a. Envíe un poema, no más de 60 versos, o líneas —en un adjunto, en Times New Roman 12, a un espacio— dirigido a Nela Rio nela @ nblatino.ca
b. Incluya, en un mensaje separado: nombre completo, fecha y lugar de nacimiento, dirección electrónica, breve bio-bibliografía, dirección postal y título del poema enviado. El poeta ganador será informado antes de fines de febrero 2011.

3. Se concederá un Primer Premio y un Segundo Premio (sin dotación económica). ANNUAL POETRY CONTEST: OUR VOICE IN NEW BRUNSWICK

1. In an effort to promote the writing of poems in Spanish by poets of New Brunswick whose maternal language is Spanish, the Annual Poetry Contest “Our Voice in New Brunswick” has been established by the Latino Association of New Brunswick and the Fredericton Chapter of the Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía.

2. The deadline for the receiving poems for the First Annual Poetry Contest “Our Voice in New Brunswick” is December 15, 2010. The results will be announced at the end of February, 2011.

3. How to participate:
a. Send one poem, no more than 60 verses or lines, as an attachment, in Times New Roman 12, single spaced to Nela Rio at nela @ nblatino.ca
b. Include in a separate email your complete name, date and place of birth, brief biographical information, postal address and telephone number, and the title of the poem.

4. There will be a First Prize and a Second Prize (without economic recognition). The event for the public announcement of the results will take place at the Fredericton Public Library, where the winning poets will receive a certificate. The poems of the First and Second prizes will be posted on the web page of Presencia.

5. Since this activity is co-organized by the Capítulo de Fredericton de la Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía the names of the winning poets will be sent to the Documentalista of the Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía in Madrid, Spain. The Fredericton Chapter will award the winners an autographed book.

6. The winning poems of the contest and others selected by the jury will be incorporated as Poster Poems of the 11th International Multicultural-Multilingual Poetry Reading and Poster Poem Exhibition, which is held in conjunction with The United Nation’s Dialogue Among Civilizations Through Poetry, World Poetry Day, and Mother Language Day. Place and date to be announced.

7. The Jury will consist of three persons of the New Brunswick Spanish-speaking community, whose decisions are final.

The poems in Antimatter are declamatory, politicized, experimental, occasionally concrete, recited, chanted, stuttered, and sung poetry produced by a Montreal poet-translator-visual artist who believes that poetry should bite, caress, stroke, laugh at, confront, lament, name, imagine, envision, remember, invoke, counterattack, and reflect.

The 2010 edition included a new 3-page poem, “the fascists are back”.
The CD contains a reading of all the poems in the 2003 edition of the book (67’ 10”).

A Spanish edition of this book was published in 2009 as antimateria (Ottawa: Split Quotation/La Cita Trunca).

Hugh Hazelton is a poet, translator and the publisher of White Dwarf Editions. For Broken Jaw Press, he translated Túnel de proa verde/Tunnel of the Green Prow by Nela Rio, Cuerpo amado/Beloved Body by Nela Rio, and Sunset by Pablo Urbanyi. He teaches Latin American civilization and translation at Concordia University, Montréal. He is the author of Sunwords (Red Giant Editions/ WDE) and Crossing the Chaco, a past editor of Ruptures, a guest editor of ellipse, and a contributor to the book+CD La vache enragée, No 2 (Planète Rebelle).

Karl Wendt, R.I.P.

Karl Wendt of Halifax, Nova Scotia, author of the first full-length book, Chaste Wood published by Broken Jaw Press in 1989, died unexpectedly on 22 August 2010. Karl had been born in East Prussia in 1944, during WWII, and came to Canada with his family in 1951. Karl was an active member of the BS Poetry Socity and the Halifax arts and literary community. For many years he ran his home as an incredible bohemian rooming house filled with tomato plants, books, music, a steady supply of coffee, and conversation to keep you going for hours and hours.

A special tribute for Karl was held on 11 September 2010 at The Old Triangle with family and friends sharing memories, his poetry, and the work of friends. I wish I could have been there but I only found out about it the evening before the gathering. I sent words, best wishes, and a poem of mine from Cover Makes a Set that Dina Desveaux asked to read.

The tarmac bums volunteered to write and hand over their speculative–creative writings on mythologies of/in the 21st century to anonymously inspire an artwork by a member of Emerge.

The BlackTop MotorCycle Gang is a Fredericton, NB-based collective of eclectic writers spread from coast to coast in Canada who stage spontaneous “reading raids” in various unannounced locations but whom are also frequently invited to appear at special events (usually) of a literary nature. Having successfully raided an issue of Nonymous magazine, this is the notorious BlackToppers’ first book.

Estimadas amigas y estimados amigos.

Amanda Castro ha muerto en su Tegucigalpa, Honduras, el 18 de marzo, 2010.

Gran amiga, poeta, ser de tiempo mítico, real, comprometido. Inolvidable su recorrido en el mágico Onironautas. No sé bien cómo se las arreglaba, pero la poesía de Alejandra Pizarnik siempre compartía nuestras conversaciones. Me la imagino sonriendo, dejando su tanque de oxígeno que la acompañó por muchísimos años, allí, quietecito, quizás en ese cuarto de ventanales por el que mirábamos Tegucigalpa y ahora, lenta y transparente, Amanda camina despacio hasta su barca. Amiga inolvidable, estará siempre en su poesía y en nuestra memoria. Ella les diría, simplemente, / cuando apenas y se distingan mis cenizas entre las aguas o el viento de un templo en Copán/ que no llore nadie/ que quemen incienzo alzando las copas/ que me voy contenta para Xibalbá/ que no llore nadie.

Carson Butts

Carson Butts lives and works in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He has an MA in Creative Writing from UNB; the long poem of which remains in hiding. He has served the lit. scene as a Managing Editor of Qwerty Magazine and as a member of the Editorial Board of The Fiddlehead. He is a current member of The Vagabond Trust writers group and, with the group, talks shop while enjoying the fine local brews of Picaroons. The Grad House is his favourite spot; barren landscapes, his favourite escape fantasies. The ceiling in Carson’s apartment leaks; he and his landlord brother are completely befuddled.

Broken Jaw in Beograd

Since 2004, Broken Jaw Press has been exhibiting its books on the Canada Stand at the annual Beograd International Book Fair. Publisher Joe Blades participated in the 2004–2006 fairs in person with presentations, readings, and book signings.

In mid October 2009, Blades attended a conference in Sofia in neighbouring Bulgaria, and entered discussions about co-publishing possibilities in the region, but couldn’t stick around until month-end for the book fair. He hopes to attend the Beograd Book Fair again in person some year soon.

a little something . . . broadsides

Chances are, unless you’ve been where I am when I am handing out Broken Jaw’s a little something . . . broadsides, that you’ve not seen one. Some recent ones are travelling with their touring authors. They get mailed (and not just to the Legal Deposit office of Library & Archives Canada!) and they are decidedly mailable.

I started doing/making/publishing them because of rob mclennan and his poem broadsides (above/ground press) out of Ottawa that happen wherever rob gets access to a photocopier. rob said that I should start doing something similar so I did, ten years ago, in 1999. I’m not nearly as prolific with them as rob, and nowadays I tend to print them inhouse rather than photocopy them.

a little something... is an occasional broadside series. They are neat publications, usually in a limited edition of 100 copies, that make a great promotional handout for their author. Each a little something... usually showcases one poem, prose piece, or visual in a 8½ x 11 trifold poster format. They tend to be published on the occasion of an author event . . . often a reading.

Staging a Poem by Nela Rio

Staging a Poem: Art Installation by local renowned poet and artist Nela Rio will be available for viewing at the Fredericton Public Library (first floor), 12 Carleton Street, Fredericton, NB on Friday, Dec. 4th (12:30-4:30) and Saturday, Dec. 5th (2pm-4:30pm), 2009. Nela Rio has constructed a material poem, so to say. This event is sponsored by the Fredericton Chapter of the Ibero-American Academy of Poetry. Everyone is welcome to come view the installation and meet the artist.

Pauline Michel is a well-known artist and writer in French Canada. Jonathan Kaplansky studied at Tufts University and received an MA in French Language and Literature from McGill and an MA in Translation from the University of Ottawa. He has translated works by Annie Ernaux, Hélène Dorion and Hélène Rioux. He currently lives in Montreal. Broken Jaw Press published Let Rest, his translation of Que repose by Acadian poet Serge Patrice Thibodeau, 2005; and Eyes of Water, his translation of Les yeux d’eau by Pauline Michel, in 2006.

A Fredericton Alphabet is a black & white photographic exploration of Fredericton’s rich heritage buildings, captured in a unique manner that illustrates the ties between architectural ornament and the letters of the alphabet.

A native of New Brunswick, John Leroux graduated from McGill University’s school of architecture (1994) and Concordia University’s graduate program in Canadian Art History (2002). Since 2001, he has taught at the NB College of Craft & Design. John is a regular contributing architecture columnist for the Telegraph-Journal. The author and photographer of three books on New Brunswick architecture, A Fredericton Alphabet, Building Capital—a guide to Fredericton’s historic landmarks (2004), and Building New Brunswick—an architectural history (2008), John was also the curator of the landmark exhibition Building New Brunswick / Bâtir le Nouveau-Brunswick at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
