La Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía, Capítulo de Fredericton, les invita cordialmente al lanzamiento del último libro bilingüe de la autora latino-canadiense, Nela Rio, exquisitamente traducido al francés por Jill Valéry y publicado por la casa editorial Broken Jaw Press de Fredericton: En las noches que desvisten otras noches/Durant les nuits qui déshabillent d’autres nuits. El evento tendrá lugar en la Biblioteca de Fredericton, número 12 de la calle Carleton, el sábado, 20 de noviembre, 2010 a las dos de la tarde. Habrá una lectura bilingüe de algunos poemas de la colección. Este libro trata de poemas homenajes a las múltiples mujeres que han padecido violencia y crueldad. El escritor canadiense George Elliott Clarke ha dicho de la colección que “Rio, como feminista heredera del gran poeta chileno Pablo Neruda, nos pide que reconozcamos que “la historia … cierra sus páginas de piedra/ sepultando/ a las mujeres que la escriben”. Ce lancement aura lieu dans la Bibliothèque Publique de Fredericton, 12, rue Carleton, le samedi, 20 novembre, 2010 à deux heures de l’après-midi. Il y aura une lecture bilingue de quelques poèmes de la collection. Friends of poetry!

The Fredricton Chapter of the Ibero-American Academy of Poetry invites you cordially to the launch of the bilingual collection of poetry by local Latino-Canadian author Nela Rio, exquisitely translated into French by Jill Valéry and published by Fredericton’s own Broken Jaw Press: En las noches que desvisten otras noches Durant les nuits qui déshabillent d’autres nuits. This launch will take place at the Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carleton St. in Fredericton, on Saturday, Nov. 20th, 2010 at 2 p.m. There will be a bilingual reading of a few poems from the collection. This collection contains poems dedicated to the all the women who have suffered violence and cruelty, whatever the cause. Canadian writer George Elliott Clarke has said about the collection that “Rio is a feminist successor to great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda” and Broken Pencil magazine deemed the English edition “A stark...moving work about the political torture of women. Fredericton Small Press & Community Fair, 13 Nov

The Fredericton Small Press and Community Fair, Autumn 2010 edition, including author readings and a “Nuestro Espacio” display for Spanish-language publications, will happen on Saturday, 13 November, from 12 noon to 5 pm, at Gallery ConneXion, in the Chestnut Complex, 440 York St, Fredericton, NB. The event is organized by Gallery ConneXion and BS Poetry Society with support from Broken Jaw Press, Capítulo de Fredericton de la Academia Iberoamericana de Poesía, and revue ellipse mag. Admission is free.

Independent, small, and micro-press publishers of books, chapbooks, artist multiples, hand-bound books, broadsheets, postcards, zines, lit mags, crafters, social and literacy info groups and more will be in attendance. The poems in Antimatter are declamatory, politicized, experimental, occasionally concrete, recited, chanted, stuttered, and sung poetry produced by a Montreal poet-translator-visual artist who believes that poetry should bite, caress, stroke, laugh at, confront, lament, name, imagine, envision, remember, invoke, counterattack, and reflect.

The 2010 edition included a new 3-page poem, “the fascists are back”.
The CD contains a reading of all the poems in the 2003 edition of the book (67’ 10”).

A Spanish edition of this book was published in 2009 as antimateria (Ottawa: Split Quotation/La Cita Trunca).

Hugh Hazelton is a poet, translator and the publisher of White Dwarf Editions. For Broken Jaw Press, he translated Túnel de proa verde/Tunnel of the Green Prow by Nela Rio, Cuerpo amado/Beloved Body by Nela Rio, and Sunset by Pablo Urbanyi. He teaches Latin American civilization and translation at Concordia University, Montréal. He is the author of Sunwords (Red Giant Editions/ WDE) and Crossing the Chaco, a past editor of Ruptures, a guest editor of ellipse, and a contributor to the book+CD La vache enragée, No 2 (Planète Rebelle).

Hazelton has been doing readings in English, French, Spanish and Portugese in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Sudbury, Fredericton, the USA, Brazil, Argentina, and elsewhere, for many years.

Karl Wendt, R.I.P.

Karl Wendt of Halifax, Nova Scotia, author of the first full-length book, Chaste Wood published by Broken Jaw Press in 1989, died unexpectedly on 22 August 2010. Karl had been born in East Prussia in 1944, during WWII, and came to Canada with his family in 1951. Karl was an active member of the BS Poetry Socity and the Halifax arts and literary community. For many years he ran his home as an incredible bohemian rooming house filled with tomato plants, books, music, a steady supply of coffee, and conversation to keep you going for hours and hours.





















A special tribute for Karl was held on 11 September 2010 at The Old Triangle with family and friends sharing memories, his poetry, and the work of friends. I wish I could have been there but I only found out about it the evening before the gathering. I sent words, best wishes, and a poem of mine from Cover Makes a Set that Dina Desveaux asked to read.

The writings in re:myth are the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang’s poetic hogrider musings for a collaborative art making and exhibition project with Fredericton, NB’s Emerge Artist Collective. The tarmac bums volunteered to write and hand over their speculative–creative writings on mythologies of/in the 21st century to anonymously inspire an artwork by a member of Emerge.

The BlackTop MotorCycle Gang is a Fredericton, NB-based collective of eclectic writers spread from coast to coast in Canada who stage spontaneous “reading raids” in various unannounced locations but whom are also frequently invited to appear at special events (usually) of a literary nature. Having successfully raided an issue of Nonymous magazine, this is the notorious BlackToppers’ first book.
